Fishy biz at Ryan:
Ryan is not closing. The current principal is retiring. Hmmmm? So Dance hires a principal he knows is
retiring in a year? Could it be that he had it pre-planned to close Ryan? Why would a principal that is retiring
put extra effort in a high-needs school? Ms. Andrews now working in the district? How was it that she was
fired and is now working in HISD in a higher paying position? Is Ryan still open because Pershing and
Lanier don't want Ryan's students? Hmmmm?

that the administration had not studied the effects of Ryan's closing on other district schools)

Sometimes unflattering information about HISD goes missing..
The results of The New Teacher Project Survey of teachers asking for their views on the
new assessment process and the role of the teacher development specialist
were supposed to be released in April, at least that's what HISD told houstonisdwatch
in response to an Open Records Request. It is now early May and there's no report
to be found. (houstonisdwatch is resubmitting this Open Request. Someone at
Hattie Mae White has the results.)

Mike Cronin wrote the following in his ethics update highlighted below:
"...Both {Great City Schools and Null-Larison audits criticized HISD’s lack of transparency.

Null-Lairson auditors said questions arose in how district officials disseminated information about
bids for work with the district among the public, board members and its own staff. They also found
that “defined procedures” didn’t exist that outlined when and how board members and vendors may
contact one another.

Particularly disturbing was Null-Lairson’s finding that documents went missing during its audit of HISD.
Trustee Juliet Stipeche immediately called for an investigation. She told Texas Watchdog in March that a
document’s chain of custody is critical to ensuring no one is tampering with public information..."

The latest on proposed ethics policy changes in HISD
Mike Cronin, TexasWatchdog.org, has the report.
"...Precedent exists for the scale of change district officials currently contemplate. A 2010
audit of the HISD capital facilities program caused board members and administrators to
merge departments, hiring a pool of on-call custodians and the re-establishment of a preventive-
maintenance program.

The proposals come as district leaders consider whether to put a bond referendum to the voters
for new school construction and renovations. Superintendent Terry Grier floated that idea earlier t
his year..."

You probably saw these TexasWatchdog.org reports when they were released in December of
2011, but they are worth another read:

Harris claims the HISD board hasn't done enough for Ryan
HISD Board President Lunceford blasts administration for hasty, sloppy
 handling of closure announcement
***********************************************************************************
Faced with the prospect of nasty protests against her, Harris retreats, even
though she voted for all the district's expenditures on Ryan
Some community activists also sent out a news release threatening to protest the
closure and a possible bond referendum this fall.

from this chron.com report:
“...The third ward community clearly sees the efforts to destroy our community through the
destruction of our schools and most recently with the projected closing of Ryan Middle School,”
the release said. “WE WILL NO LONGER TOLERATE THESE ACTIONS AND PROMISE TO PICKET
AND PROTEST THESE THINLY VEILED ATTEMPTS TO TAKE THIRD WARD, DESTROY OUR HISTORY,
AND EXPAND MIDTOWN...”

Mike Lunceford expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Grier's team handled matters:
“..The proposal to close Ryan MS has an affect on all surrounding schools,” Lunceford wrote. “The
Administration failed to discuss any of this plan with affected Trustees. I want to make sure that the
Administration does their job and looks at all affected schools and their current populations and
does not overload any school...”

Lunceford's comments are consistent with his view of the current HISD leadership. Harris has
voted to close schools in her district in favor of charter schools owned by associates.  So now
she doesn't want to close Ryan and claims, erroneously, that HISD hasn't spent enough
money on the school. Maybe she should go back and review her own votes.

Mike McDonough was a hard act to follow at Pin Oak:
Pin Oak is a great place to work because of the kids. It is a great place to work because 80% of
the staff were hired by a visionary principal, M. McDonough. Pin Oak is great DESPITE poor leadership,
rampant disorganization, and financial mismanagement. If it weren't such a showpiece for the district,
I'm sure more scrutiny would reveal many, many cracks in the facade.

I've worked under four different principals in this district and every one has their assets and drawbacks,
Monaghan is no exception. Like many HISD principals, however, she values and rewards unquestioning
compliance and keeps the counsel of a very few number of individuals in the school. Some of have been
calling it a** kissing. That is rather crude, but not way off the mark. Of course, McDonough was no
different in that respect, he had his own inner circle too.

The difference being that Monaghan, as a person, acts and reacts from a place of fear. What's changed
at Pin Oak, and the person who is posting in defense of Monaghan probably hasn't taught there for very long,
is the school climate. She has made it clear that if you disagree with anything, you are better off being quiet.
Faculty meetings used to be a discussion, a forum for teachers and staff to vent and resolve issues. Now,
communication is at a minimum and totally one sided.

Is Monaghan's leadership more efficient? Probably. When you don't ask for input, that tends to save time.

Is Pin Oak a great place to work? Compared to other HISD schools, yes. However, what made Pin Oak truly
unique is fading more and more each year.

Is every teacher valued, evaluated, and treated equally at Pin Oak? No, but we never are.

More on McKenzie: from Why
Why is it so hard to believe that a erson can leave a princial job on their own will? What do you
want to know? He left Ryan. He could have stayed. If you want to believe that he was "put out"
then go right ahead. The problem with some of us teachers is that we actually sometimes don't
have the confidence to walk away from bad situations. He is a principal else where and is happy.
His job was secured well before he resigned.
by Why (May 7, 2012)

And Please do tell:
To all the Ryan teachers that have shown support for their former leaders, please do tell the rest of us
why he was "put out" then? It just doesn't add up, if ALL the staff thought he was doing a good job, why
wasn't there more of an out cry when they got rid of him? Instead all we heard was barely a whimper!
So what really happened because you guys were there through it all. So, we are waiting to hear it all from
BOTH sides of the aisle? Please do tell.......
by Please do tell (May 7, 2012)

Drawing parallels between Ryan and Bonham:
What ever happened at Ryan happened with our former principal Mr. Fernandez. Ms. Crowe told us that
Mr. Fernandez decided to leave, but we all know that he was forced out. Before he left we were able to
teach our students. He was asked to leave at the beginning of the month of January. When our new
principal arrived in Feb. we have been doing test prep and not been able to teach our students. We
understand that if our students do well on STAAR and Standford she would receive a large bonus
because our school this year is unacceptable and the students will show improvement. That equals
for the boss big bonus money. Some HISD administrators aren't here for the students, they are here
to make money. Please check school profile. Where did we fail as teachers at Bonham Es?

HISD withdraws plan to close Ryan Middle School
On this one Manuel Rodriguez is right: HISD should have given more notice it
was planning to close Ryan despite Grier's claims the district had been talking
about it "over the last six weeks"
See chron.com report on Ryan
Paula Harris' solution: Throw more money at Ryan: One HISD insider wrote this:
How are they going to pay for a failed Apollo program and where is the money coming from????

Another deal to quiet upset people to pass a bond in November and rape taxpayers.

HISD bond HCC bond Metro Bond and City of Houston bond would mean everyone's property taxes
would increase by 30 cents per $100 valuation!!!!!!! Let's keep open failed schools at the hands of
Terry Grier.

Lauren Topek, former Shadowbriar principal,  emailed Brian Busby, a senior
officer in HISD's Operation Department, about moving boxes, repairing
AC, and cleaning tile floors that wouldn't shine, but never asked for help when
Antonia Rivas was required to work 16-hour days
From the Houston Press:
"
...In the last days before the Christmas break, when things were already busy enough at the school,
the head custodian fell off a ladder while trying to change a lightbulb, breaking ribs and other bones.
As the custodial employee with the longest time on the job, Rivas became head of the crew..."

"...But no replacement was brought in. Instead, Rivas's son and daughter say, their mother was told she was
going to have to work a 16-hour day to cover for the missing man. Principal Lauren Topek gave her task
after task, and one fellow employee said when Rivas finished her work and tried to go home early one
day, Topek said no, she hadn't finished her shift..."

Antonia Rivas died on December 21, 2011.

Here are the emails Lauren Topek sent to Brian Busby from August 9, 2010, through Feb. 14, 2012.

No where does Lauren Topek ask for assistance from Busby, as she should have done when her
plant operator went out on medical leave.

In fact, the last comment Busby made about the Shadowbriar tile floors that just weren't
shiny enough. Busby suggested disciplinary action needed to be taken against the
Shadowbriar custodians.  No wonder Ms. Rivas felt so much pressure to keep on
working even when she knew she was pushing herself too hard.

Jorge Lopez, Jr., the custodial supervisor for Shadowbriar, either did not know about
the plant operator's injury or chose to do nothing about the stress on Ms. Rivas.

When individuals whose claim to fame is a degree from a prestigious college and a passing
score on the Haberman become principals, tragedies like the one at Shadowbriar are
bound to happen. Ms. Topek earned good grades at Harvard, but apparently was quite
deficient in the common sense  and humanism facets of her development.

Irony, anyone? Roland Fryer touted his "no excuses" model  and now
HISD's head honchos are finding excuses for Ryan's Apollo demise

Will the board hold Grier responsible for his Apollo failure at Ryan?
houstonisdwatch is fully supportive of the efforts of staff at Ryan to deliver
the best education possible to their students. One of the
predictions this website made about Grier's Apollo disaster, as well
as predictions made by a key parent group, that Grier would not
be able to sustain enrollment in middle and high schools stigmatized
by the Apollo label, has come true, providing us with clear evidence of
Grier's systemic failure in what he hoped would be his HISD legacy.

HISD is relying on Dedicated General Revenue of $4.4 million to sustain
Apollo. Both Terry Grier and Roland Fryer made promises that no
general revenue funding would be used for this program and that
borrowed funds would be paid back.

Ryan's McKenzie viewed positively by some staff members
Surprising support for Michael McKenzie raises question of Dance's support
as ill-will and accusations against McKenzie mounted
McKenzie disagreed with Grier and Dance's support for Ryan and supported the staff. The few
that did not like him were tose that missed work every other day and could not teach or lead
effectively. He also recruited and enlisted community support. McKenzie did not know the mess
that happened to Ms. Andrews. He inherited a bitter and angry staff. But he also kept his door
opened and listened to us and tried to warn of of what was going to happen once the new
appraisal system was in. Sure enough, every former staff member was put on a growth plan
after he left by the new principal from Clifton and many were fired. He warned us. He was a
good young principal and the kids wish he were back daily. What you wrote of his is false
and I have a different view of this site.
by Another Ryan teacher (May 6, 2012)

Mr. McKenzie didn't follow the master plan for Ryan
Mr. McKenzie was supposed to play the role, let the school close and get promoted. Instead, he
pushed back at them once he realized the sham. They then worked to create controversy in
hopes that the school would fail academically. It didn't fail. So they brought the principal from
Clifton to finish the job. She is never at work and she was the perfect yes-woman to do the job.
He was not a yes-man and they did not like that. The fact that Ruby Andrews now works in the
district is suspicious also. Maybe she knew. But again, Ryan's community is failing so it is
no surprise that HISD can do whatever it wants.
by Ryan teacher (May 6, 2012)

Another example of using fear to intimidate teachers....
The fact that this particular individual chose houstonisdwatch to post this drivel is further
proof that postings on this site do matter, they are read by the head hanchos at Hattie
Mae White, and the only way the Grier regime has of spreading the message is to use
fear and intimidation....

"There is a war on teachers and you all better start preparing." - LOL! I love it... Perhaps the war
is on people like most on here that post "news"... you people don't have clue one what you're talking
about half the time, and certainly never present all the facts of any situation any of the time. I guess
that's why universally this site is... and will remain a piece of comic fodder.

Do you REALLY want to make a difference? Get your stories straight (as in honest), get your facts in
line, and stop shouting that the sky is falling every chance you get...

But then.. it's easier to bitch and complain than to actually be a grown up and work on issues....

Thanks for the laughs!

(Editor:
Your comment embodies the Grier approach to school governance - deny the truth,
attack the speaker, put kids last. Bloggers here have been reminded
of the vacuous, self-serving agenda the Grier "TEAM HISD" follows.)

Does HISD follow this
T.E.C. rule in the assignment of substitute teachers and permanent substitutes?
To parents: If your child has a permanent sub have you received notice of the certification standard
he or she has?

Can a school district hire a permanent substitute instead of a certified teacher who applied for the
same position?
Pursuant to Section 21.003 of the Texas Education Code, school districts must follow the state certification
rules when hiring teachers and other professional personnel. The rules governing certification requirements
can be found in the 19 TAC Chapters 227 through 245 of the Texas Administrative Code, and the rule governing
assignment of public school personnel is 19 TAC 231.1. A school district may employ a teacher under an
emergency permit if they have been unable to secure a certified and qualified person for the position. To
activate a permit, the district must follow the procedures set forth in 19 TAC Section 230.501 – 230.512 (subchapter Q).
However, if an uncertified individual is assigned for a certified teacher that will be absent for more than 30 consecutive
instructional days due to documented health related reasons and has expressed the intention to return to the
assignment, a permit is not required. 19 TAC 501(g). In any event, if a person who is uncertified or serving under
an emergency certificate is assigned to the same classroom for more than 30 days, the superintendent must
provide written notice of the assignment to parents of students in the classroom per Section 21.057, Texas
Education Code. For more information, contact the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC). [Top]

Apollo replaced veteran black teachers with novice white and Asian teachers
From Jesse Alred's blog: Black faces in high places but fewer in the classrooms of Apollo 20

"...Whether Apollo 20 targeted African-American teachers for removal, of if HISD was simply operating
from a biased point of view related to class background, age or experience, is impossible to say. But
the pattern is not a subtle one. In regard to teacher displacements, Apollo 20 resembles the District of
Columbia reform movement, where Michelle Rhee replaced hundreds of African-American and Latino
teachers and teacher aides with younger whites and Asians with suburban pedigrees.
HFT should have made the unfairness of these teacher displacements a major issue.

Will Ann Best take responsibility for the apparent failure of the TDS program?
Why would she? Under Grier top level administrators are not even expected to be
at work everyday, let alone actually lead school improvement

@Are you kidding, Whoa! This TDS is treading in dangerous waters. Showing contempt for teachers
will never give you access to classrooms. Nor will bragging about the "TDS model". What is that model
by the way, waving goodbye as you blow through the front door and out the back 15 minutes later?

I have news for the Teacher Development Specialists in this school district. I have spent the last year working
my but off trying to teach my below grade-level students how to read well and I'll be damned if I'm letting you or
your friends take credit for my work! How could you? I saw you ONCE this year! You did NOTHING for me other
than introduce yourself! And since I never saw you again, I don't even remember your name! Furthermore, if all
of you want to teach so desperately, if all of you are so passionate about saving 70,000 below grade-level readers,
go back to the classroom!!!! You can use your brilliance to make up for the damage the rest of us have done.
by Who Are These People? (May 5, 2012)

To Who Are These People?, I'd like to see the survey we all filled out, I'd like to see what HISD teachers have
said about our work with TDS this year. Isn't it odd that the survey results have not been published yet? HISD
has no trouble publicizing everything else under the sun. Why aren't they forthcoming with the TDS survey?
Could it be their grand experiment failed? Could it have failed because of the arrogant attitude so evident in
that comment posted on Erica Mellon's blog? When TDS treat teachers as inferiors, we close our doors and
say no way!
by Don't want your help (May 5, 2012)

would look if you didn't know the names of your students? Hmmmmmm........do TDS even get evaluated?

In deference to all of Larry Marshall's "Yes" votes for Grier, HISD administration trying
to move Winn around under the radar, or so it seems
@Watcher in HISD
email addresses do not amount to much! They are trying to save WInn and
so they WOULD say she is at TH Rogers all the while placing her at Reynolds ES! Please remember
who we are talking about here, Winn, Uncle Larry, and BFF Paula because many people are calling
for her termination AND if she tried to pull her mess at TH Rogers like she did her others stops,
THOSE parents would DEMAND her termination AND get it becuase HISD has to keep them happy
or they would all leave for private schools. Also, it takes HISD quite a while to update their email
addresses especially when you are protecting and hiding someone from the public to save their
behind!
by Jackson Middle School Employee (May 4, 2012)

@Jackson MS,
you are on spot here! They think if they move Winn under the "dark of night" they
can protect her,and place her under either Uncle Larry or Paula's board postion for protection!
NOT going to work, we will follow her and keep track until SHE gets what she deserves and that i
s termination from HISD like she did so many good teachers who had the misfortune of being
screwed by this woman! So come out, come out, where ever you are?

Grier takes a corporate approach to school principalships, sees teaching experience as
unimportant and it's hurting HISD schools
from ROE insider:

We're finally getting to do the climate survey at River Oaks ES. This has been the worst year I can
remember at the school. Regularly, I see veteran teachers and staff members in tears, so upset
at the way they've been treated. And all by someone with very little time in the classroom and NO
EXPERIENCE in an elementary school. She may have IB experience, but she doesn't understand
children or curriculum.

The results of this survey should be interesting!

Caution advised on the apprach Lanier and Pershing should take when asked to accept even
more students:

Just checked - Lanier's Board trustee is Paula Harris and Pershing's Board trustee is Mike Lunceford.
We are zoned to Pershing in my area - I will send off letters to both of them right now requesting that they
not accept increases to their zoning.
by JT (May 4, 2012)

JT: I admire your wanting to protect the enrollment at Lanier and Pershing. No school's enrollment should
be pushed beyond its ability to provide a quality education for every student, zoned or otherwise. However,
we must insure that others don't perceive this concern as a desire to curtail the influx of minority students
to these schools. This is not a new issue.

The approved name is Lockhart-Turner ES  but Paula
Harris has another agenda in mind
Somnolent trustees will probably let Harris sneak through this school naming proposal:
Approval To Name A New School Facility Lucian L. Lockhart Elementary School thereby
insulting the proud community legacy of the Reverand George B.M. Turner
What's the problem with a little exaggeration when you want to get your way?
(Image used with permission of Davetta Daniels' campaign for District IV HISD Trustee)

Will enough community members come out Monday evening to support Ryan?
Even if they do, will it matter?
D-6 Approval To Consolidate James Ryan Middle School
into Crispus Attucks Middle
School, Ezekiel Cullen Middle School, Richard Dowling Middle School, Sidney Lanier
Middle School, And John Pershing Middle School And To Adjust Attendance
Boundaries
BOTH TURNER-LOCKHART AND RYAN ARE PAULA HARRIS SCHOOLS.
Good question or cheap shot? How will Paula Harris' friends benefit from the passage
of the two board resolutions metioned above?

Will Ryan become another Paula Harris school sold off to her charter school friends?
Harris constantly brags about the Apollo program which clearly failed to attract
students to the Elgin/Live Oak campus

Will the Ryan campus be turned over to STEM?
Texas law permits the diversion of bond money in certain circumstances, but promising
one things to voters and doing another shows a lack of character by the HISD trustees

from 7 millions questions:
Ryan Middle School had millions left over in bond money that was to be used for 'Ryan Middle School'.
Ultimately, the district found that the bond money for imrovements to an already clean and well manicured
campus would be more valuable (as a bargening tool) for whatever they plan for the building as opposed
to using it for Ryan students. Is it leagal to continue to use that bond money left over and should the community
be aware that HISD didnt use all of the bond money from the previous election as a point of concious for their
decision on this upcoming bond election.

Other things to consider about Ryan: -They always wanted the building and to close the schools. Thus, to
drain feeder kids: the all boys and girls schools were open, Dobson turned into a k-6. That's about 300
students gone. -The district exposed their own lies. For example, if you knew the school needed resources,
why was Ryan's Title 1 money taken to pay for Apollo tutors and you lie to the world and say that the tutors
were paid for by Apollo fundraising. -Academically, which school ranks higher in state assessment and
Children At-Risk Ranking? Attucks, Cullen or Ryan. Ryan. -Statistically, nearly 90% of Ryan's students that
attend Lanier were commended performers. Lanier is just down the street from Ryan. What if the people in
3rd Ward were not just a bunch of talkers and actually did something in the community. What if TSU's resident
was not so full of shit and adopted Ryan. U of H and Rice did more for Ryan kids than TSU. Ryan had the potential
to be Recognized. -With tougher state standards, Ryan was not one of the schools that caused HISD to increase
its unacceptable list. -Does HISD not know that the worst elements of 3rd Ward and Sunnyside will cause mass
chaos at Attucks and Cullen when Ryan's 104 Gang set foot on their campus. -Why did the last principal really leave?
In two years he brough two campues in 3rd Ward from unacceptable to acceptable? Could it be that he was not a
Grier flunky or did HISD try to ruin him because he challenged their BS?

Several bloggers blame Fryer and Grier, not Dimmitt
In defense of Julia Dimmitt; from
KnowTheFacts:
Let's set the reord straight. When Ryan became Apollo, Ms . Dimmit and Ms Andrews were
pushed aside for Beard and McKenzie. The school was on the upswing. Dimmit was just
asked to come back in August to help and Andrews has been helping elsewhere in the district,
sadly not at Ryan. Don't blame the demise on these two.

Hold Roland Fryer, Terry Grier, and Dallas Dance responsible for the gargantuan failure
of Ryan Middle School...and a school board who turned control of Ryan over to Grier
Ryan AEIS 2007-08  School Rating: Acceptable  Enrollment: 497
Ryan AEIS 2008-09 School Raiting: Unacceptable  Enrollment: 389
Ryan AEIS 2009-10 School Rating: Acceptable  Enrollment: 364
Ryan AEIS 2010-11 School Rating: Acceptable  Enrollment: 329

Once a shining star, Julia Dimmitt played yes-woman once too often
As SIO, Dimmitt failed to reengerize the school, failed to stop the harassment of faculty
by Michael McKenzie, and failed to get the Ryan community to buy-in Grier's Apollo illusions

Lots of
wasted money and time spent on Ryan

From JT:
From the Chronicle School blog today 5/3: "Ryan Middle School, a historic Third Ward campus
whose enrollment has dropped to 265 students, would close at the end of this academic year
under a proposal up for school board approval next week. Students from Ryan would be sent to
Attucks, Cullen, Dowling, Lanier and Pershing middle schools. "

According to HISD Data from 3/6/2012:

Pop = # '11-12 students Cap = Capacity

Attucks pop: 451 Cap: 1144 Room for 693

Cullen pop: 498 Cap: 1106 Room for 608

Dowling pop: 1331 Cap 1800 Room for 469

Lanier pop: 1334 Cap: 1276 Over capacity by 58

Pershing pop: 1733 Cap: 1631 Over capacity by 102

When Lanier & Pershing are already over capacity and the 3 other schools are under by
460+ students EACH - Why should Lanier & Pershings zones be increased??? The Lanier
& Pershing parents should put up a good fight about this one... Meetings are scheduled for
next week - very short timeframe...

Just so Terry Grier is not confused: The exodus of students from HISD to private
schools may not rattle enrollment numbers, as HISD's enrollment is already in
decline, but it could impact test scores

@Education Grrrrl, You've said it beautifully. Tsunamis of parents ARE beating their heads against the
walls of Central Office. I am one of those parents. My two children attend one of the highest performing
elementary schools in HISD, but my husband and I are frustrated, AGAIN, by district policies and can't
make headway in expressing reasonable concerns. After a year of practice STAAR tests, reinforced by
practice STAAR worksheets, followed by the real STAAR tests, our children are now being prepped for
Stanford. They are exhausted, we are exhausted......and the bottom line is that we are looking into private
education. Please note the use of the word "education" in my last sentence. That is something we aren't
getting any longer in HISD. Test prep, yes. Education, no. So wake up HISD Board members. The erosion
has begun. You are in the process of losing some of your brightest students and most supportive parents,
parents who refuse to be supportive any longer because our children are being transformed into automatons
who fill in bubbles on answer sheets. I don't blame the teachers. They are simply doing what they've been told.
We all know who the real culprit is, but since some Board members don't care, and the ones who do are
powerless,
we are forced to move our children from public to private education. So be it.

are involved?  Christian Winn's reputation precedes her, and HISD has a growing
public relations problem as a result. Why doesn't Winn resign and save HISD
from continuing to embarass its top leadership?

High profile cases of applicants lying on resumes and applications:  Most were fired

From March on:
If anyone from the Reynolds ES school area read visit this site please get together and march down
to your school and find out if Winn is on that campus! If she is you need to start a petition to get her out
before she can ruin your school! Chat with others out there in Sunnyside and find out why they placed
her at your school. Get her out BEFORE she can do any damage! AND ask members of this board why
after ruining Frost ES and Young ES out is the South side WHY they didn't leave her over at T.H.Rogers
where they placed the ignorant woman?? Why is she BACK out on the South side? If she isn't good
enough for the west/San Felipe area why is HISD dumping their garbage back on us out her? What did
we do to deserve this woman? When is enough damage to schools on the our side of town by this
unqualified person going to end? With only 2 years of teaching experience, how is she qualified to
judge teachers in our schools? Make her get up and teach a lesson, oh that's right she can't, but
can tell certified highly qualified teachers that they can't teach! SHE needs to go NOW you beter
get her out!!!!

From Reynolds teacher:
Can anyone on this board or Dr. Grier give us a justified reason why Winn will be at our campus?
If this goes through, she will have been on 5 campuses within HISD in the last 5 years! She needs
to go home, NOT to another campus! You do not give teachers this many chances, you "boot" them
out the door behind from this one crazy woman! Can this board or anyone else please explain how
this one woman has taken the leading role in terminating over 25+ teachers and SHE gets to keep
HER job? Hello.........what is wrong with this picture? I hope she doesn't ruin all the hard work we
have done here at our school!

us they would know how unhappy and frustrated the "true" employees(yes that's the teachers)
are with this destructive administration! They come on here to try and act like we are all whiners!
Again, if they treated us with respect, we wouldn't be blogging about them. We get more respect
from our students then many of the so-called leaders of this district. So when a few of "them"
from West 18th want to come on here and visit and leave their Grier propaganda, we all know
the truth and it doesn't match what they are saying!

War on teachers is obvious to parent groups in HISD...and to teachers; from

Thanks again for reminding us that there is a war on teachers in the country. Powerful people will
not give up their hatred for unions, the country, and public education. Control of public money is their

members making millions from the law they passed. NCLB created positions for them (e.g., Condaleeza,
Colin Powell, Neil Bush, and others) are profiting greatly at the expense of our kids.

Hey Battle-tested! What's up with you? Do you not know that this website would disappear in a flash
if there was a honest-to-goodness dialogue between Central Office and the teachers? Take some time.
Talk to teachers who have come from union friendly states. They are in shell shock here in Texas because
they're unions back home would not be allowing all the abusive treatment of them. The first profanity-laced
email from a parent would have had the union reps by their side. Here is HISD? You don't dare point something
like that out. Otherwise you become a "problem" and not part of the "solution". If there weren't huge tsunamis of
teachers and parents feeling like they are beating their heads against the walls of Central Office, there'd be no
need for Mr. Bingle.

The naming of a school should be time to unite the community;
Harris uses a flame-thrower and her constituents are burning with anger

PAULA HARRIS' SELF-STARTED WAR WITH HER COMMUNITY
Harris pulls in a principal and an SIO to commandeer naming rights, ignoring community

"Once again HISD board trustee, Paula Harris is associated with a scandal this time in the naming or
renaming of a District IV school. We allege that Paula Harris has committed acts in violation of a public
trust for possible political gain in an attempt to circumvent board policy in regards to naming the new building
located at 3200 Rosedale in District IV and her actions are tantamount to malfeasance. We further allege that,
School Improvement Officer, Patsy Cavazos and Lockhart principal, Felicia Adams have been in collusion to
manipulate this same board policy and Adams has essentially been allowed to lie to the community, stuff the
ballot box and harass the teachers. Her actions are apparently supported by Paula Harris and District
administration..."

That is the opening paragraph of a press release slated for publication very soon.  Way past politely
knocking on Paula's door, the community is infuriated by Paula's arrogance. Is there money changing
hands somewhere behind the scenes in this affair, or is Paula just betraying her community's
trust? Hmmm, I wonder where the word trustee comes from?

Making Ryan an Apollo school no doubt sealed its fate
It's official: HISD closing Ryan MS as reported by Say Goodbye to Ryan:
Say bye to Ryan Middle School. An official meeting was held to announce the plan to close the school.
After it has been pimped to raise Apollo money, produce double digit math gains, increased attendance,
increased it's position in the Children At-Risk Ranking (although the term at-risk is outdated in the world
or respected academia and literature). The people in 3rd Ward should be ashamed of themselves to let
this happen. All that shouting about community is really just talk. The Chronicle won't report that though.

houstonisdwatch really does bother some people
In the past month some Grier sycophants have blogged comments condemning
houstonisdwatch bloggers and praising the Grier administration. Others have
tried to scare (tactics of intimidation and fear outted them as Hattie Mae insiders)
bloggers that somehow Terry Grier can identify their identity.

I know have a microscopic view of the inanity HISD teachers experience everday.

What makes these statements so ludicrous is the fact I don't ever know who is
blogging. The system in place at houstonisdwatch.com completely protects
the privacy of the blogger.  There is no cyber control anywhere else.

I don't reveal my sources and never will.

What's interesting is the timing of these spam comments. They just happen
to coincide with a surge in daily readership of the site.

So keep blogging. Keep revealing what you have to deal with on a daily
basis. Your identity is always safe. As far as the spammers' comments
are concerned, I delete them just as soon as I see them.

So you don't believe there's a war on teachers? How does Pearson's profit influence
your job stability?
From Washingtonpost.com:
Attacks on teachers have occurred in the midst of a broad-based attack on the bargaining rights
and benefits of all public workers — but even by that standard, teachers have been singled out.

In New York State, where teacher evaluations were just released to the press, the state Legislature
just passed — and the governor signed — a bill that exempted police and firefighters from having their
evaluations released to the public. What better symbolizes the way teachers have become “fair game”
for public demonization?

There are huge profits to be made in the testing industry, in educational technologies that replace teachers,
and in constructing and managing charter schools, so it is not hard to see why some people in the corporate
world would benefit from attacking public education and teachers unions."

Just listen to Matt Damon: Stop the war on teachers!
from ThinkProgress.org:
Actor and activist Matt Damon spoke at the Save Our Schools rally today. Before he spoke, Damon granted
ThinkProgress an exclusive interview. We asked him about how teachers unions are being demonized in
much of the media and teachers are being blamed as the root of all problems in public education. Damon
told us that the attacks on teachers unions are part of a larger “war on unions over the last decade” and
condemned “punitive policies” that punish teachers without looking at the social factors that lead to student
achievement.

ASPIRE?
How can it not be as obvious to everyone as it is to me that the whole “Aspire” program is a HUGE
drain on HISD resources which really accomplishes NOTHING in the overall scheme of things! Do
you honestly think the teachers who received the big bonuses would have given any less effort if
they were not getting it? No! They were giving their best because they are conscientious about their
job and care about the students! In a perfect world it would be great to pay out all those bonuses,
but with a financially ailing system that just is not logical! The one who benefitted most is the
Superintendent who is already being paid more than generously for his leadership. He supposedly
was to accomplish 24 goals, of which only 1/3 have been brought to fruition, so why should he be
given a bonus? A few years ago our principal was fired because our school which, at the time had
just inherited several traumatized Katrina transplants, did not make the desired grades on TAKS testing.
If the criteria is you reach the goal or you are removed, then why reward a man who did not reach the goals
he was given?? Technically, using that logic shouldn’t he be fired instead?!! And the new breed of principals
are ruthlessly RIFing really good teachers seeking to get bigger bonuses for cutting budgets without regard
to what’s good for the students or treating loyal teachers humanely! Bad Karma is building all around HISD!!!!

Standing up for Monaghan & Pin Oak:

I am so sick and tired of the whiners at Pin Oak Middle School. You work at one of the best schools in HISD
and all you do is complain. Ms. Monaghan is one of the best principals I have known. She is very active and
involved in the school. She feels everyone should do what is expected of them and what is best for the students.
If you are having a problem with her, maybe you should ask yourself if you are doing your job to the best of your
ability. To the person that calls them self Notanasskisser, the teacher you are talking about was out on Military
Leave as I'm sure you know, but she is also an excellent teacher. She was rated on the time she was there,
just as you were. I'm sure she doesn't appreciate you inferring to her as an ass kisser. Also, Concerned
Citizen (really?), get your facts straight. PTO sold the food during lunch and PTO is paying the fine, not the
school nor Susan Monaghan.

on people like most on here that post "news"... you people don't have clue one what you're talking about
half the time, and certainly never present all the facts of any situation any of the time. I guess that's why
universally this site is... and will remain a piece of comic fodder.

Do you REALLY want to make a difference? Get your stories straight (as in honest), get your facts in line,
and stop shouting that the sky is falling every chance you get...

But then.. it's easier to bitch and complain than to actually be a grown up and work on issues....

Thanks for the laughs!

There's a fine line between "bitching and moaning" and identifying the problem
From Advice Wanted:
@Battle-test.... You got it right! Some of the comments posted on this site are sheer nonsense,
motivated by personal vendettas. These people need to take it somewhere else. But having said that,
I have to disagree with you as well. There are serious issues in this school district and smart, well-informed
people are raising them here. The testing issue is one that affects me deeply because I see how my own kids
are losing interest in school. All of this test practice is draining their energy and sucking the joy out of learning.
That should not be! Not for my kids or anyone else's!

So when you say that it's easier to "bitch and complain than to be a grown up and work on issues", I'd like to
know how I should "work on issues." I've emailed Board members. I've spoken to the principal. I've been a
"grown up" but it hasn't worked. I think that's the part you don't see. What you might not know is that many
parents hit a wall in HISD, and Ms. Pola's disingenuous comments only heighten our frustrations.

Do you have any suggestions for a more productive way for us to address our concerns?

I'm curious. If a board member or any HISD adminstrator accuses an HISD employee of posting messges about that board member or administrator. And that is a false accusation? Can that board member be sued? Can HISD be sued? Why can these people accuse just anyone?

In response to the comments of Sick and Tired about standing up for Monaghan & Pin Oak I must ask did Monaghan ask you to post these comments? If Susan Monaghan is one of the best principals you have worked for, then you have worked for some sorry ass ones. You must be a card carrying member of her ass kissing crew. The only way anyone is going to work at Pin Oak and be happy is to be in the Monaghan Ass Kissing Click. As far as the teacher that was out on military leave- she is president of that click. Monaghan is one of the most selfish backstabbing prinipals I have ever met. And Pin Oak being the best middle school in HISD is true, but not because of Susan Monaghan, but because of Mike McDonough who Susan cannot stand by the way and the staff. Pin Oak was the model middle school in HISD when Susan was over at Lovett ES playing crossing guard after school. The staff at Lovett I hear was sooooo glad that she got promoted to Pin Oak and was even happier when she took her secretary with her. But now they are being allowed to pollute and destroy Pin Oak. What a shame!
Someone send a lifeline to Sam Houston! When is it going to end? Teachers are dropping like flies! And the kids are runnin' the school!!!
What happened to the money HISD made from closing Rhoads, Grimes and Foster schools?
My Child Is Not a N----- !

A student's freedom to enjoy the basic rights of citizenship was recently violated by the principal of Attucks Middle School. Dr. Deirdre Sharkey chose to degrade a student under her care with a racially-charged term that has plagued Black Americans for centuries. The principal used this derogatory term with full knowledge of HISD's policy to "foster a climate of mutual respect for the rights of others."

It is deeply troubling when a "professional," especially one with the title of principal, chooses to refer to a student with this offensive term while attempting to handle adverse circumstances. The utterance of any racially-offensive slur is unacceptable, regardless of the ethnicity of the speaker (Dr. Sharkey is African-American).

HISD's Board of Trustees chose to "handle" this delicate matter by temporarily removing the principal from campus. The removal was indeed very temporary, one week, without so much as an explanation or apology from HISD. The Board's decision to reinstate this principal, who is clearly "not a good fit" for Attucks, is a slap in the face to every parent and student who lives in Sunnyside and attends (or has attended) Attucks. It is also a slap in the face to every teacher and administrator who has respectfully served this school and community.

We have made many sacrifices, for many years, for the education of our youth. To remain silent and ignore such an insensitive decision by our Board of Trustees (who are charged by taxpayers to provide guidance and support to schools and the communities in which they serve by establishing clear, consistent, district-wide goals, high standards, and expectations) is a slap in the face to everyone who has suffered and struggled to eradicate racial injustice.

By reinstating Principal Dr. Deirdre Sharkey, The Board of Trustees has sent the community of Sunnyside a loud and clear message: Schools (principals) must be empowered to develop and implement the methods that best achieve their unique and individual instructional goals. Apparently calling a student a "n….." is now an acceptable method. In one voice, let us send the HISD Board of Trustees the unmistakable message that there is no room for racism in education and that they (HISD's Board) must remain accountable to the public for high-quality educational services for all children.

If you deem this principal's use of racially offensive language a "good fit" for our community, then do nothing. If you deem this principal's language unfit, then contact the HISD School Board to have this principal removed.

ONE VOICE for equality and justice in education !

"It is the duty of teachers to direct the thought and outlook as well as mould the character of their students. For this reason, the responsibility of teachers in training student-teachers aimed at the future progress and development of our country and the proper upbringing of students, could hardly be underestimated".- HAILE SELASSIE I
Why is it such a big deal to let the community name their school? If the community want to have Turner Lockhart names on school so what; HISD have bigger problems and issues that need attention other than this. Is this just a power struck system running loose and NOT doing what the tax paying residents want in their own community?
Juat remember....working for HISD and this administration IS NOT like a box of chocolates. It's more like a jar of jalapenos. What you do today, might burn your butt tomorrow! Unless you are one of the chosen few like Christian Winn!
When you think about many of the administrators that are ruling HISD alongside King Grier, keep this thought in mind......light travels faster than sound, that's why some of these educrats may appear bright UNTIL they open their mouths and you hear them speak!?!?!
@Education Grrrrl, You've said it beautifully. Tsunamis of parents ARE beating their heads against the walls of Central Office. I am one of those parents. My two children attend one of the highest performing elementary schools in HISD, but my husband and I are frustrated, AGAIN, by district policies and can't make headway in expressing reasonable concerns. After a year of practice STAAR tests, reinforced by practice STAAR worksheets, followed by the real STAAR tests, our children are now being prepped for Stanford. They are exhausted, we are exhausted......and the bottom line is that we are looking into private education. Please note the use of the word "education" in my last sentence. That is something we aren't getting any longer in HISD. Test prep, yes. Education, no. So wake up HISD Board members. The erosion has begun. You are in the process of losing some of your brightest students and most supportive parents, parents who refuse to be supportive any longer because our children are being transformed into automatons who fill in bubbles on answer sheets. I don't blame the teachers. They are simply doing what they've been told. We all know who the real culprit is, but since some Board members don't care, and the ones who do are powerless, we are forced to move our children from public to private education. So be it.
@Txstephens-maybe they are using the funds to change all the external door locks in each school throughout the district. (only 2 keys will be given.) Anyone else hear that?
@Wow. You wrote, "Principals, if you make everyone's lives miserable, you are only shooting yourself in the foot." I think you're wrong about that. Davila just received a promotion, she will be an SIO next year and that position comes with a big pay raise. I wouldn't call that shooting yourself in the foot! I call that a reward!
@Wow. You wrote, "Principals, if you make everyone's lives miserable, you are only shooting yourself in the foot." I think you're wrong about that. Davila just received a promotion, she will be an SIO next year and that position comes with a big pay raise. I wouldn't call that shooting yourself in the foot! I call that a reward for a job well done!
@ Hard to believe. I call that ass kissing. Davila must have done all the SIO has asked her to be able to get a promotion. Most of the principals kiss ass to see if they can get a promotion. There are principals that preach that they work for the students, but they really work for themselves. Some principals also say that they believe in human capital, but then let teachers go from there school. HISD is full of sh_ _. That is waht I believe. HISD don't believe in college bound they believe in test prep and standarized testing.
@ASS KISSING. It looks like that is happening althrough HISD. In our school that is what happens everyday. TEST PREP and more TEST PREP and MORE TEST PREP AND MORE TEST PREP!!!!! NO MORE TEST PREP THAT IS WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm surprised to just now see Patsy Cavazos named for something on this blog. Patsy was key in covering up the first investigation in to the illegal use of funds by Linda Llorente at Austin in which an unreported snack bar had raised thousands of dollars-off the books-over the years Llorente was at Austin. After a screaming match between Linda and Patsy in Linda's office, the report from Patsy to her boss at the time, Sam Sarabia, was that there was nothing to worry about at Austin. The business manager got a write up, but Linda came out squeaky clean. Friends protect each other.
From the Chronicle School blog today 5/3: "Ryan Middle School, a historic Third Ward campus whose enrollment has dropped to 265 students, would close at the end of this academic year under a proposal up for school board approval next week. Students from Ryan would be sent to Attucks, Cullen, Dowling, Lanier and Pershing middle schools. "

According to HISD Data from 3/6/2012:

Pop = # '11-12 students Cap = Capacity

When Lanier & Pershing are already over capacity and the 3 other schools are under by 460+ students EACH - Why should Lanier & Pershings zones be increased??? The Lanier & Pershing parents should put up a good fight about this one... Meetings are scheduled for next week - very short timeframe...
OMG! How can that happen? Who's your school board trustee? Please God, don't let it be Larry Marshall.
Just checked - Lanier's Board trustee is Paula Harris and Pershing's Board trustee is Mike Lunceford. We are zoned to Pershing in my area - I will send off letters to both of them right now requesting that they not accept increases to their zoning.
JT: I admire your wanting to protect the enrollment at Lanier and Pershing. No school's enrollment should be pushed beyond its ability to provide a quality education for every student, zoned or otherwise. However, we must insure that others don't perceive this concern as a desire to curtail the influx of minority students to these schools. This is not a new issue.
@Wow and Hard to Believe: I too did not know Ms. Davila was made a SIO. What I do know is what I have experienced first hand from Davila. It's hard not to make a personal attack on her after seeing all she has done to ruin so many lives without a backward glance. It is hard to have watched her as she deliberatley and cruely framed teachers. What was/is her motive? I have no idea. I only know that for two long years I have watched her and heard her as she dismantled a high school that was very, very close to passing AYP and state tests. It is hard to keep quiet when half truths are spouted by those that have really very little impact on the classroom. Where do we go from here? We will continue to fight the good fight, believe that there are good people in the world, and do our very, very best to educated our children. Here is to every teacher that has taught at Lee High School in the Apollo program. Many of us understand, support you, and will help you anyway we can. Because, we know you have the unbelievable job to restore a love for education to students that have been drilled to death for the sake of personal aspirations. I guess as corny as it sounds, you/we have been Superman all these years. It's just that that powers that be didn't want to admit it.
The HISD global address list now shows Christian Winn assigned to TH Rogers MS.
We're finally getting to do the climate survey at River Oaks ES. This has been the worst year I can remember at the school. Regularly, I see veteran teachers and staff members in tears, so upset at the way they've been treated. And all by someone with very little time in the classroom and NO EXPERIENCE in an elementary school. She may have IB experience, but she doesn't understand children or curriculum.

The results of this survey should be interesting!
@Watcher in HISD email addresses do not amount to much! They are trying to save WInn and so they WOULD say she is at TH Rogers all the while placing her at Reynolds ES! Please remember who we are talking about here, Winn, Uncle Larry, and BFF Paula because many people are calling for her termination AND if she tried to pull her mess at TH Rogers like she did her others stops,THOSE parents would DEMAND her termination AND get it becuase HISD has to keep them happy or they would all leave for private schools. Also, it takes HISD quite a while to update their email addresses especially when you are protecting and hiding someone from the public to save their behind!
@Jackson MS, you are on spot here! They think if they move Winn under the "dark of night" they can protect her,and place her under either Uncle Larry or Paula's board postion for protection! NOT going to work, we will follow her and keep track until SHE gets what she deserves and that is termination from HISD like she did so many good teachers who had the misfortune of being screwed by this woman! So come out, come out, where ever you are?
Pin Oak is a great place to work because of the kids. It is a great place to work because 80% of the staff were hired by a visionary principal, M. McDonough. Pin Oak is great DESPITE poor leadership, rampant disorganization, and financial mismanagement. If it weren't such a showpiece for the district, I'm sure more scrutiny would reveal many, many cracks in the facade.

I've worked under four different principals in this district and every one has their assets and drawbacks, Monaghan is no exception. Like many HISD principals, however, she values and rewards unquestioning compliance and keeps the counsel of a very few number of individuals in the school. Some of have been calling it a** kissing. That is rather crude, but not way off the mark. Of course, McDonough was no different in that respect, he had his own inner circle too.

The difference being that Monaghan, as a person, acts and reacts from a place of fear. What's changed at Pin Oak, and the person who is posting in defense of Monaghan probably hasn't taught there for very long, is the school climate. She has made it clear that if you disagree with anything, you are better off being quiet. Faculty meetings used to be a discussion, a forum for teachers and staff to vent and resolve issues. Now, communication is at a minimum and totally one sided.

Is Monaghan's leadership more efficient? Probably. When you don't ask for input, that tends to save time.

Is Pin Oak a great place to work? Compared to other HISD schools, yes. However, what made Pin Oak truly unique is fading more and more each year.

Is every teacher valued, evaluated, and treated equally at Pin Oak? No, but we never are.
I just read this comment posted on Ericka Mellon's blog: "Zoe is passionate about education and it is a true loss for our district to see her leave. As for the haters bashing her and her leadership model, with 70,000 students reading below grade level I wouldn’t hang your hats on what you were doing before the TDS model."

How offensive is that? I don't know Zoe, the assistant superintendent who supervises the TDS, and I have nothing to say about her one way or another. What I am appalled by is that the Teacher Development Specialist posting this comment would have the audacity to suggest that teachers in this school district can't teach reading and needed the TDS to show them the way. Bring on the Stanford scores! I expect to see 70,000 HISD students now reading on grade level because of the intervention of TDS!
@Are you kidding, Whoa! This TDS is treading in dangerous waters. Showing contempt for teachers will never give you access to classrooms. Nor will bragging about the "TDS model". What is that model by the way, waving goodbye as you blow through the front door and out the back 15 minutes later?
I have news for the Teacher Development Specialists in this school district. I have spent the last year working my but off trying to teach my below grade-level students how to read well and I'll be damned if I'm letting you or your friends take credit for my work! How could you? I saw you ONCE this year! You did NOTHING for me other than introduce yourself! And since I never saw you again, I don't even remember your name! Furthermore, if all of you want to teach so desperately, if all of you are so passionate about saving 70,000 below grade-level readers, go back to the classroom!!!! You can use your brilliance to make up for the damage the rest of us have done.
To Who Are These People?, I'd like to see the survey we all filled out, I'd like to see what HISD teachers have said about our work with TDS this year. Isn't it odd that the survey results have not been published yet? HISD has no trouble publicizing everything else under the sun. Why aren't they forthcoming with the TDS survey? Could it be their grand experiment failed? Could it have failed because of the arrogant attitude so evident in that comment posted on Erica Mellon's blog? When TDS treat teachers as inferiors, we close our doors and say no way!
@Who Are These People, Did you say you can't remember the name of your TDS? You know what's worse than that? She can't remember your name either! But wait, isn't that her job? I wonder how your evaluation would look if you didn't know the names of your students? Hmmmmmm........do TDS even get evaluated?
To Elementary Teacher and Who Are These People, your experience with TDS mirrors my own, we call them "water vapor" on my campus. Such a waste of money! Wouldn't our kids be better served if TDS returned to being classroom teachers, or at least worked with the teachers who need help, instead of knocking on my door. I have high scores and strong evaluations. Let them pay attention to the people who really can't teach. They're out there. I have been a middle school teacher for over 20 years and resent some 25 year old sticking her head in my door to say I need her help. No, it's the other way around! You need MY help because your handful of years teaching do NOT equip you to tutor me. But I understand their boss taught for only 2 years as well so it's simply a case of the blind leading the blind.
Hey guys, why don't a few of you start taking videos on your cell phones, which by the way, just about all of you have them, and atart posting these administrators on their "rants and tirades" on youtube and let others see how they "really" treat their staff! Hey if the kids are smart enough to do it to us teachers, maybe we need to learn a little from our students because one thing they are very clever with and that is technology and how to use it! So get out the phone and start recording and IF you are worried sbout posting it, just ahare it with a few studens "accidently" of course AND I bet it will not take long for THEM to go viral with it! Lets show the public what these tyrants are REALLY like because the videos won't lie and HISD can't spin it like they do what is written about this administration! So, ready, quiet on the set, AND action..... If HISD and it administration is afraid of being talked about on THIS site can't you just imagine what they would do when idiots like Davila, Winn, and others are plastered on youtube??????
@More than words.....which administrators are you referring to, other than the usual culprits, Davila and Winn?
@Lorraine...from mnay of the osts on this site lately, I would say "go ahead and take your pick" because it seems there are many to choose from! How about the so-called leaders at Greogory-Lincoln, Sam Houston, PinOak, Alcott, Mitchell Relief School, Bonham, to name a few and teachers know the rest but seem afraid to talk about it! Look on the HISD job vacancy site and check how many campusues have multiple openings. Why do you think these people are escaping, I mean leaving and who is behind the mess? A question back to you and others out there is this...."how many campuses can you name that are truly happy and not just lying to try and kiss behinds to keep a job?" I don't blame them for "faking" happiness and silence, but the course this district and administration is currently on, I hope they like being "happy" alone because morale, trust and respect are no longer words many teachers and other staff members believe in anymore! SAD! SAD! SAD!
I think we should get rid of bad teachers. Who doesn't agree with that? But don't make the atmosphere on campuses so threatening that you're destroying the morale of the good ones too. And that's where we are in HISD. But again, we can't win. I am hoping for a job in Spring Branch. I am fortunate enough to have an interview lined up. If they ask to see my evaluations, I can show them proudly. But then they'll wonder why I'm leaving. I know better than to tell the truth. The truth: I hope to work for a school system that cherishes its teachers and it's ertainly not HISD.
Dear Editor:

Ryan Middle School had millions left over in bond money that was to be used for 'Ryan Middle School'. Ultimately, the district found that the bond money for imrovements to an already clean and well manicured campus would be more valuable (as a bargening tool) for whatever they plan for the building as opposed to using it for Ryan students. Is it leagal to continue to use that bond money left over and should the community be aware that HISD didnt use all of the bond money from the previous election as a point of concious for their decision on this upcoming bond election.

Other things to consider about Ryan: -They always wanted the building and to close the schools. Thus, to drain feeder kids: the all boys and girls schools were open, Dobson turned into a k-6. That's about 300 students gone. -The district exposed their own lies. For example, if you knew the school needed resources, why was Ryan's Title 1 money taken to pay for Apollo tutors and you lie to the world and say that the tutors were paid for by Apollo fundraising. -Academically, which school ranks higher in state assessment and Children At-Risk Ranking? Attucks, Cullen or Ryan. Ryan. -Statistically, nearly 90% of Ryan's students that attend Lanier were commended performers. Lanier is just down the street from Ryan. What if the people in 3rd Ward were not just a bunch of talkers and actually did something in the community. What if TSU's resident was not so full of shit and adopted Ryan. U of H and Rice did more for Ryan kids than TSU. Ryan had the potential to be Recognized. -With tougher state standards, Ryan was not one of the schools that caused HISD to increase its unacceptable list. -Does HISD not know that the worst elements of 3rd Ward and Sunnyside will cause mass chaos at Attucks and Cullen when Ryan's 104 Gang set foot on their campus. -Why did the last principal really leave? In two years he brough two campues in 3rd Ward from unacceptable to acceptable? Could it be that he was not a Grier flunky or did HISD try to ruin him because he challenged their BS?
@ Lorraine...good luck and you don't have to say a word about why you are leaving HISD! Other districts are fully aware of what is going on within the walls of HISD and they are more than happy to receive as many of the outstanding teachers as HISD will give up to them through HISD's own studity! The mass exodus of teachers and others from HISD has been noted since Grier's arrival and will continue until his dismissal. All teachers want is the respect they deserve for all their hard work and dedication for making HISD a great place to work until the current leadership and it's continual threats and intimadation on a daily basis hs brought HISD down to being a "big joke" with all the unqualified people in positions they can't handle like HR dept., PR dept., TDS, SIO's, Pincipals, and the list goes on and on and on and......! Heck why would ANYONE in their right mind want to jump through all the "hoops" that a person with ONLY two years of classroom teaching experience, designed in order to become a teacher in a failing distrist? Ann Best is in over her head and she should move on like her friend to Harvard and HISD needs to replace her with someone who really has experience and knows what a "real" teacher does and needs to be successful in the classroom! AND after getting into HISD , to be humiliated, threatened with termination, and harrassed by unqualified leaders.....again, why would I choose this district? HISD might one day wake up, BUT it will be too late because all the good teachers will have left the district and ARE NOT returning for more torture! Again, best wishes and God's speed on escaping HISD ASAP!!!
Didn't HISD close Douglas ES in that area a few years back and sent those kids to Dodson ES across the freeway? When will these communities wake up and stop HISD from destroying their schools and closing them down for what? Where is the board member that is suppose to be representing thesse folks? Why are they allowing their board member to dismantle their schools? WHy are they not demanding answers behind Lockhart-Tuner ES? Helllllloooooo.....where the woman with the braids....oh yah Sheila Jackson-Lee? Oops, no cameras around for photo ops I guess! Like someone stated, something DOES NOT pass the smell test here? Remember when Paula Harris backed closing Rhaods and Grimes Elementary schools and then took THAT bond money to Yates HS? And then a "private" school opened at the Grimes site BEFORE the site could even be so-called closed????? Again, this smells to high heaven with the same board members involved as usual and supporting it! Thanks board members for your continued support for "outside" interests instead of those of the communities you are supposely elected to represent BUT are slowly destroying!?!
The federal law, NCLB, rates schools based on tests scores. When test scores are low, the law mandates the district to change staff, allow the school to turn into a charter, or close. Outside reformers do not care about our community, and, apparently, believe it's okay to insult our friends, neighbors, and our children. We don't want our schools to close, or our teachers to lose their jobs because a recruiting company convinced a young student to move here for two years. We need to stop accepting the stupid NCLB ratings before more communities are destroyed. These ratings are based on false data, false premises, and incorrect analyses.
Let's set the reord straight. When Ryan became Apollo, Ms . Dimmit and Ms Andrews were pushed aside for Beard and McKenzie. The school was on the upswing. Dimmit was just asked to come back in August to help and Andrews has been helping elsewhere in the district, sadly not at Ryan. Don't blame the demise on these two.
Knowthefacts. You are right. Fingers can only be pointed at Grier and Fryer. Once Harvard set foot in Ryan, it was the beginning of the end. Ms Dimmitt helped several staff members relocate once McKenzie came on board. I know she did not want to see Ms. Andrews removed from Ryan. She was on our side and tried to do the right thing.
@Save Sam Houston: Unfortunately, the common thought among all of us that have been at Sam for a significant amount of time (years), is that we have regressed to the Roberto Gonzalez days. This is the reason why so many of the teachers have transferred, resigned or retired for next school year. But apparently, the SIO (Alaniz) and the trustee (Eastman) seem to think that things are just peachy on campus. Obviously, they don't bother to ask us or spend much time in the building. But all will be fine, she will bring in TFAs to replace us and the kids will continue to run the campus!
McKenzie disagreed with Grier and Dance's support for Ryan and supported the staff. The few that did not like him were tose that missed work every other day and could not teach or lead effectively. He also recruited and enlisted community support. McKenzie did not know the mess that happened to Ms. Andrews. He inherited a bitter and angry staff. But he also kept his door opened and listened to us and tried to warn of of what was going to happen once the new appraisal system was in. Sure enough, every former staff member was put on a growth plan after he left by the new principal from Clifton and many were fired. He warned us. He was a good young principal and the kids wish he were back daily. What you wrote of his is false and I have a different view of this site.
That sign you have blasted was put there by the art teacher that Mr. McKenzie fought to keep from getting riffed. It was a part of a campus beautification day with a partnership from Keller Williams and one of the many efforts he embarked on to enlist community support.
What happened at Ryan can only be blamed on one person-GRIER. Not McKenzie, Andrews, Dimmit, or even Dance (he fought to keep Andrews by the way). If you don't want to see it close, be at Paula Harris meeting Tuesday at Ryan and make your voices heard. There is still hope.
To all the Ryan teachers that have shown support for their former leaders, please do tell the rest of us why he was "put out" then? It just doesn't add up, if ALL the staff thought he was doing a good job, why wasn't there more of an out cry when they got rid of him? Instead all we heard was barely a whimper! So what really happened because you guys were there through it all. So, we are waiting to hear it all from BOTH sides of the aisle? Please do tell.......
Why is it so hard to believe that a erson can leave a princial job on their own will? What do you want to know? He left Ryan. He could have stayed. If you want to believe that he was "put out" then go right ahead. The problem with some of us teachers is that we actually sometimes don't have the confidence to walk away from bad situations. He is a principal else where and is happy. His job was secured well before he resigned.
As soon as Mr. McKenzie left Ryan, I sent my son back to KIPP. Mr. McKenzie was his 5th grade teacher at KIPP and we lived in the community and chose Ryan when he came. He still keeps up with my son.
So let's see...Jeremy Beard was Ryan's SIO and Attuck's SIO and Ryan made Acceptable with a 25% sped population. It is on record that the district did not provide Ryan with resources but he still made due and was thrifty. The kids respected him and the campus was always orderly, clean, and well-managed. Any Ryan staff or teacher that says that his door was not open or that he did not enlist our ideas is full of it. Yes, if you could not teach then he addressed you as he should have. Ryan's demise began a long time ago and it is what it is. Mr. McKenzie finished the year strong and packed his bags.
Hey ya'll don't get your panties in a bunch okay! He gones and there had to be a reason and YOU guys were there! I didn't say he did anything wrong BUT they did let him go! Was there a higher plan by HISD leadership to remove him BECAUSE he was fixing the problems and THAT was not in "their" future plans for Ran MS? Like I said, something is not right here and if you were on the campus and dealing with him what do you think happened? Again, was the plan by Paula and others on West 18th to close this school and they just used him and others along the way to make it appear they were trying to save the school when they knew they were closing it all along? That's what we want to know! This can't come as a total surprise to those of you who have been ging through it all these years! You had NO idea???? Hmmmmmmm.........please do tell!
Mr. McKenzie was supposed to play the role, let the school close and get promoted. Instead, he pushed back at them once he realized the sham. They then worked to create controversy in hopes that the school would fail academically. It didn't fail. So they brought the principal from Clifton to finish the job. She is never at work and she was the perfect yes-woman to do the job. He was not a yes-man and they did not like that. The fact that Ruby Andrews now works in the district is suspicious also. Maybe she knew. But again, Ryan's community is failing so it is no surprise that HISD can do whatever it wants.
A Parody of a Typical Closed School Board Meeting. Agenda: The Birth of a Cancer in Education

District Trustees (in unison) welcome Dr. Golden Boy to the school district. Dr. GB, with eagerness in his voice, replies, "I'm glad to be of service to this wonderful school district. Having said that, I would like to get down to business. What have you people been thinking? There is simply too much waste in this district!" District Trustees respond with a breathtaking gasp, "But we are a large school district." Not impressed, Dr. GB continues with his introduction speech, "You have teachers with continuing contracts! Gee whiz, what is that all about? You have too many custodial and cafeteria workers! You have truckloads of  administrative and clerical personal, and you have too many administrators who are negligent in their duties to compile termination data on teachers with continuing contracts! All of which are clearly not a good fit in my scheme of things." District Trustees exhale and ask, "What can we do? Where do we start?" Dr. GB responds in a cunning voice, "Well, I'm glad you asked those questions. I have a complete list of changes I would like to implement immediately."   Dr. GB's assistant hands out leather bound booklets to each Trustee. Upon quick examination of the booklet, District Trustees quip that the booklet that lists all of Dr. GB's proposals has 550 pages! "Our constituents will simply not allow all these changes!" Dr. GB, appearing a bit miffed, expresses in a calm voice, "You hired me to bring, and we all concur, much-needed change to this district, a district, I remind you, that is saddled with nepotism, bureaucratic stagnation and waste. Where do you suggest we start? Should we start with District 3, District 4, or District 9?" District 3 Trustee quickly responds that his constituents on the southeast end can't take another hit at this time. District 9 Trustee chimes in with a wave and mentions that he is working on some Costa Rica trip and, with a thumbs-up gesture, reassures Dr. GB that he has his support. Dr. GB notices that District 4 Trustee is missing and inquires as to her whereabouts. District 9 Trustee informs him that she stepped out to take a call from a business associate/friend and that she will return shortly. Dr. GB, as not to lose the momentum of the meeting, turns to ask District Trustees 5 and 7 if he can start his reforms in their districts. He is quickly rebuffed with a resounding stonewalled response to not give it any thought, stating they and their constituents are the reason Dr. GB was hired. All eyes turn to District 4 Trustee as she returns to her seat. Dr. GB then announces that his reforms will start mainly in Districts 9 and 4. District 4 Trustee, having missed the exchange, responds with, "What? Ok.” After receiving her approval, Dr. GB, with great excitement in his voice, proclaims a measure of victory. "Excellent! We're all in agreement that mainly districts 4 and 9 will be our targets." District 9 Trustee, having concluded his Costa Rica business, jumps to his feet with excitement in his voice and yells. "I've got tickets to Costa Rica!" District 9 Trustee realizes that his outburst of excitement is out-of-order, regains his composure and asks that the minutes be read back to him. Upon hearing the minutes, he gives another thumbs-up gesture and again states that he has first class tickets to Costa Rica.  Dr. GB, not knowing quite sure how to accept District 9's good fortune, introduces Dr. Rodney Cryer. Dr. GB explains that Dr. Cryer has had marginal success with his program in inner city schools such as the ones in District 4 and 9. Dr. Cryer takes the podium and begins to explain that his program is called Dollar 20 and that, basically, his program targets low-performing schools and removes all administrators and teachers who don't fit the profile of what a Dollar 20 administrator or teacher should be.  Dr. GB asks if the profile of a Dollar 20 administrator or teacher requires that the candidates be young, articulate, aggressive, and insensitive individuals.  Dr. Cryer, who is young, wealthy, and articulate, states without hesitation that success often is achieved with money and young ideas. He then asks, “What Dollar 20 face do you think your public would easily buy into?” “Money!” someone yells. Amused, Cryer goes on to state that resistance "can" be resolved by offering Dollar 20 students monetary rewards for their after-school hours of participation! Dr. Cryer also reveals that similar monetary incentives have proven successful on campuses currently participating in his program. Dr. GB rises to his feet to exclaim how much he admires this guy! With his hands clasped and  stretched above his head, he begs Dr. Cryer to continue.

Dr. Cryer suggests that in order to be successful, and given the fact that the district has extensive public documentation of reports chronicling cheating on many of its elementary campuses, Dollar 20 should initially be implemented on the elementary level.  Dr. Cryer further expresses his concerns that the cheating on standardized tests distorts the true snapshot of a student's academic growth and makes it nearly impossible for 6th grade middle school teachers to duplicate or surpass such exaggerated levels of academic success. In closing, Dr. Cryer reminds Dr. GB and the Board of Trustees that Dollar 20 requires reconstitution of all selected Dollar 20 pilot schools and that reconstitution of those schools will strip many teachers and administrators of their jobs. Dr. GB's eyes are unable to be seen because of a big grin that has now covered his excited face. District 4 Trustee voices her approval with a hardy "Amen," and inquires about the impact Dollar 20 will have on the continuing contract teachers who are permanent fixtures on most elementary campuses. "Elementary parents can be vicious and protective of their respected teachers." She goes on to express concerns about the hundreds of Black teachers who would take the initial brunt of losing their jobs on the campuses that are to be reconstituted. Dr. GB, recognizing his near-victory is slowly dissipating, reminds District 4 Trustee that the board hired him to bring change to a troubled District and that he can't do it if she's going to play the race card. He and the Trustees plead with her to be a team player if she wishes to ever become Board President.  District 4 Trustee: "What? Ok." The matter solved and victory once again in his grip, Dr. GB and the Board of Trustees agree that implementing Dollar 20 on the elementary campuses will generate too much resistance and negative publicity. Publicity that, in essence, could sink Dollar 20 before it leaves the dock. District Trustees concur and motion to have  a select group of low-performing middle and high schools that are mainly in Districts 4 and 9 be targeted as pilot Dollar 20 schools. They all then acknowledge with a chuckle that elementary school parents are indeed very protective of their schools. Dr. GB, unable to contain his laughter, proclaims that a good laugh is good for the soul and that he will start the process of terminating the services of all administrators and teachers that are not a good fit.

District Trustees, scratching their heads, raise the question, "Dr. Golden Boy, before we conclude today's meeting, we would like to know what is your explanation of not being a good fit?" Dr. Golden Boy replies, “Any administrator who isn't young, articulate, and aggressive in implementing my demands to document and submit letters of termination for those teachers and administrative assistants who are either unwilling or unable to achieve my demands and meet my expectations. Especially continuing contract teachers! They are clearly not a good fit!” He then turns to his secretary and advises her to note a request to meet with the legal department to see what can be done to rewrite the laws governing continuing contracts. District 9 Trustee, now grasping what has transpired, states that he isn't worried too much about what is to become of all the hundreds of Black teachers and administrators who serve schools in his and District 4's districts, but demands that his niece be sanctioned. Dr. Golden Boy and the other Board Trustees, valuing District 9's position as a team player, give him the thumbs-up gesture and quickly suggest that he ask the new Board of Trustees President about any future concerns that he may have about his other constituents. "Who would that be?" asks District 9 Trustee. That would be District 4 Trustee Barla Barris. Explaining that it wouldn't look good if a District 5 or 7 Trustee was the face of a program that will target poor, underfunded, low-performing minority schools, District 4 Trustee gleefully shakes everyone's hand and greets each of them with, "What? I'm Board President! Thank you! Thank you!" Phone in hand, she speed dials her business associate/friend. "Hey. You're talking to the new Board President! Girl, do you know what that means?"

Thus the cancer in education began to spread. Many who were unaware and untouched by Dollar 20 cloaked themselves in blankets of false security, feeling safe in their havens, ignoring the cancer that was destroying their colleagues' careers. Today, with security blankets stripped away, school Districts like HISD are "Winning." The Untouchables now know what the first wave of dedicated teachers and administrators, who lost their jobs because they were branded "not a good fit,” had to endure.

Change without questions or review is change that is easily won. - Booker Thomas
What ever happened at Ryan happened with our former principal Mr. Fernandez. Ms. Crowe told us that Mr. Fernandez decided to leave, but we all know that he was forced out. Before he left we were able to teach our students. He was asked to leave at the beginning of the month of January. When our new principal arrived in Feb. we have been doing test prep and not been able to teach our students. We understand that if our students do well on STAAR and Standford she would receive a large bonus because our school this year is unacceptable and the students will show improvement. That equals for the boss big bonus money. Some HISD administrators aren't here for the students, they are here to make money. Please check school profile. Where did we fail as teachers at Bonham Es?
@Booker Thomas You got it absolutely correct on your posting! What ocurred in these districts is a mirror image of what Rhee did in the DC schools and how could the two biggest loud mouths on the board who themselves are African American allow this to happen on their watch? AND Dr. GB himself has alledgedly stated that teachers from mainly black universities are NOT a good fit for HISD! Why are these two fools still around after all the destruction through job loss and school closings they have brought upon their districts? AND as you stated...they started in these disttricts because they knew that they couldn't get away with it elsewhere at that time. BUT now that they have cleared out and closed the south down, guess what, now they have the rest of you in their sights!?! Be ready because as we speak Dr. GB and his wrecking crew are setting up shop at a school near you!?!?
please help us at gregory lincoln!sos
@ by slave at Gregory-Lincoln, you need to call attention to the school by having the parents march on the school! Teachers take turns staying home 10-15 at a time! Anything to disrupt the day and have parents call media on her. Also, if she is writing you up because SHE says you can't teach or whatever, email her and everyone else asking her personally to come teach a lesson and show you what SHE wants! DON'T let her get away with saying, "I'll send someone." Heck no witch, you said I can't so make HER teach a lesson! Keep emailing her and others until she shows up and ALL staff needs to do it! Call the evil woman out, and make her put her money where her BIG mouth is!!!
Ryan is not closing. The current principal is retiring. Hmmmm? So Dance hires a principal he knows is retiring in a year? Could it be that he had it pre-planned to close Ryan? Why would a principal that is retiring put extra effort in a high-needs school? Ms. Andrews now working in the district? How was it that she was fired and is now working in HISD in a higher paying position? Is Ryan still open because Pershing and Lanier don't want Ryan's students? Hmmmm?
Well what do you know I just try to contact someone at the HISD , to see if we could get some answers or help to straightened our dear PTO board up at Sutton Elementary , but they just kept transferring me from extension to extension like good 5 times , that's a shame, all I want is for someone to answer a few questions, one question like, if is right that the president of the PTO can served also as the treasurer? because that's the case right here and if she can expend the money in candies and god knows what else without giving receives or clarifications for the spending, we parents never know where the money goes , the only thing that this lady on the phone was surprise of was when she asked me , how many members of the PTO board are they? and I told her 2, yes people this school has a pto that has only a president-treasurer and a secretary , and both of them don't even belong to this school, I urge someone to please inform someone at HISD that cares , to check this up , inspect the books, audit there expenses, someone has to care about this , please do something HISD , next year I will not be here at Sutton to see all this mess but I feel that I have the responsibility to at least try to help fix things up, there is many crooked things here people , you will be surprise.
For two years, Paula Harris and others did nothing but watch as the Apollo Program removed strong teachers, chased students away, and played musical chairs with building principals. Now, all of the sudden, Mrs. Harris is concerned about the welfare of Ryan's students - at least the 265 who are left. Now, all of the sudden, Mr. Lunceford is concerned about Ryan's students - at least to the extent of keeping them out of Lanier and Pershing. What a guy!

The Ryan community deserves their fair share of blame as well. I am so sick of hearing about community pride only when a school is on the verge of closing. Where was this community pride when good teachers were removed? When administrators kept changing? When students kept leaving the school? As much as people might like, you cannot lay all of the blame on Grier, Harris, and Apollo.

I am afraid that my former school, Attucks MS, and Jones HS are in the same boat as Ryan. If you visit the HISD website and check school profiles, you will see that both schools suffer from declining enrollments. I'm not sure about Jones, but Attucks has also suffered from constant changes in leadership. Attucks has had two principals, four assistant principals, and two SIO's in less than two years. So much for stability and consistency. Much like the Ryan community, the Sunnyside community offered little resistance to Apollo.

When Julia Dimmett called me in June of 2010 to tell me, over the phone, that I wasn't a "good fit" for Attucks after 29 years of proven success, I laughed. Later that summer, I sent Dr. Grier a certified letter in which I expressed my concern that certain Apollo schools were selected because HISD expected to encounter little resistance from the surrounding communities. I told him he should be careful about using our students as guinea pigs for his and Dr. Fryer's grand experiment. Well, two years later, the experiments are continuing - with the acquiescence of the Sunnyside and Third Ward communities.

Yes, Dr. Grier and Dr. Fryer have created a monumental mess, but they couldn't have done it without Paula Harris, the other board members, and uninvolved communities.

Attucks, Ryan, and Jones all have the same board member (Paula Harris) and the same SIO (Julia Dimmett). Make of that what you will.
Listen.....can you all hear it? It is Grier, his cronies and asskissing administrators, and many on this board sucking the LIFE, HEART, and SOUL out of HISD and its teachers and staff all for monetary gains for themselves!!! FOR SHAME....many of you on West 18th should feel guilty sbout what you are doing to this district! But then again, I guess you need to have a heart and soul to feel these emotions which many upper people in HISD are seriously lacking! Lord please forgive them for they do know what they are doing and one day judge them accordingly for it!
Is this district trying to implode communities by closing school after school? These buildings were around long before most HISD board members were born. They are the center point of a community. In some cases generations of families attended the school. How disrespectful can certain "trustees" be to think they can dismantle communities, little by lttle, school by school until certain areas no longer have educational facitilites in their neighborhood. DO NOT say it is an economic move when the ASPIRE AWARD was just blasted today in an email in preparation for next year. And again, all of this comes down to 2 words, The Vote! If you want change in your school board, you can do it by voting!
Jones is in the same boat as the other black Apollo schools. Jones is on its fourth principal in four years. The only remaining administrator that cared about the school and community because he himself is a Jones graduate is being removed by the principal. Paula Harris nor any of the people at HISD care about these schools. It is a ploy for them to pad their resumes and line their pockets. All of the teachers that had an interest in the success of the school and community were removed when the school became an Apollo school. Jones is probably headed down the path of closure because Apollo and Teach for America are not the answer for schools like Jones. The current principal, Elaine Lewis, is a buffoon. She is getting rid of people who are assets to the school and Mark Bedell, the SIO, could care less. He is trying to propel himself to his next six figure position. Lewis treats staff, parents, and students like they are stupid by using sarcasm and yelling at them. She lets the Secretary take off whenever she wants and take trips to New York with the administrative staff. Her interest does not appear to be the students but kicking back and making people's lives a living hell until she can retire. Why won't the communities come together to demand better for the community schools before we lose them all to politics, charter, and specialty schools?
If all of the big wigs at 18th street think the Apollo schools are so great, why don't they have any of their children enrolled at any of them? Why are their children at Bellaire, Lamar, Lanier, Pin Oak, DeBakey, etc.? They know that these schools are not properly lead and funded!!! Going to school for an extra two hours and on Saturdays will not make students any smarter!!!! The students need someone who really care about them!!! They don't need to be a pawn for the big wigs on 18th STREET to get RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just pray and keep the faith!!!!! We are all in the same boat! I work at Sharpstown International and our principal is the type of person that thinks everything he says is fact. He has his spyes in every department(they go back and report everything you say)!!!! We are not allowed to go against anything he says!!! He's heartless!!! Working with children was my lifes' joy and he literally destroyed that for me!!!!!!!!!! I smile and keep going because I know that God has something Greater than Sharpstown International for me!!!!!!!! So more STRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To Jackson Middle School Employee, If you expressed yourself more professionally, without the colorful language that usually appears in your posts, you would capture a larger, more sympathetic audience.
I read this on Ericka Mellon's blog this weekend----"Zoe is passionate about education and it is a true loss for our district to see her leave. As for the haters bashing her and her leadership model, with 70,000 students reading below grade level I wouldn’t hang your hats on what you were doing before the TDS model."

I don't know Zoe and certainly wish her well at Harvard, I'm sure she deserves it or she wouldn't have been accepted. But that comment by a TDS that we were all a bunch of losers before the "TDS model" came along is a little more than I can stand! Is this kind of attack on teachers called winning friends and influencing people? When I see the TDS coming in my direction next year, believe me, I will walk the other way.
Correction on my previous post: Mark Bedell is SIO at Jones, not Julia Dimmett. Sorry about that.
@ Try it....worrying about your sympathy at this point is laughable! If you haven't been personally attacked by these "fake" leaders than you don't have any idea what they are capable of dong! There HAS been a war declared against CERTIFIED VETERAN teachers as well as others within HISD and this administration fired the first shot heard round the district! Maybe you're one of the lucky "sheeple" hiding out until the slaughter by Grier and his buddies is over and he has moved on and left total destrcution behind for you and others to clean up! AND the bad thing is by than you will have to do it pretty much by yourselves because everyone else in their right mind will have either been forced out or left on their own accord instead of falling victim to these educrats who will most certainly move on and try to sell their "snake oil" to another unsuspecting victims! So again, your sympathy and support is coming just a little to late for many good teachers thrown under the bus by this administration so being nice towards them again is laughable to say the least!
To Jackson Middle School Employee, you missed my point completely!!! Reread what I wrote. It's not about WHAT you say, but HOW you (and others) ) say it. Judd Bingle has made the very same point. Most people reading this blog are looking for a professional presentation of ideas, not a message with off-color language. It's as simple as that.
Que lastima! Mis amigos dicen que Sra. Eastman no comprende las problemas de Latinos! Pero Alaniz es un Latino, que es la problema con Alaniz?
#fishybiz If you look at enrollment at Lanier and Pershing you will see both are over capacity. Obviously, they don't need 200+ students from any school. Your comment implies there is another reason. Why is it that the community only comes forward to support the school when it is threatened with closing? The students in this school certainly deserve better from the district and the community.
